Oyster Perpetual Submariner

The reference among divers’ watches

The Oyster Perpetual Submariner and Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date, archetypes of the divers’ watch, epitomize the historic link between Rolex and underwater exploration.

02.Image M126619LB 0003 2009jva 002

Launched in 1953, the Submariner was the first divers’ wristwatch waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The Submariner Date, with its date function in addition to the time, was introduced in 1969. The waterproofness of both models was later increased to 300 metres (1,000 feet). Thanks to their renowned robustness, they have moved beyond the marine depths, becoming watches of choice for a wide range of sports and other activities.

A TRUE DIVERS’ WATCH BY DESIGN

As an underwater survival tool, the Submariner’s design has been entirely dictated by the practical needs of divers. The model has evolved technically and been endowed with features to improve overall functionality.

Featuring a 41 mm Oyster case, distinctive dial with large luminescent hour markers and hands, unidirectional rotatable bezel and Oyster bracelet, the Submariner and Submariner Date are among the most recognizable watches ever designed. Contributing to the strong visual identity, a graduated Cerachrom bezel insert made from high-tech ceramic is key to their functionality. Its 60-minute graduation allows a diver to monitor diving time accurately.

Reliability, robustness and functionality

The Submariner and Submariner Date’s Oyster case is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 300 metres (1,000 feet). The Triplock winding crown – fitted with a triple waterproofness system – screws down securely against the case, providing increased water resistance.

07.Image M124060 0001 2001ac 010

Designed to be both robust and comfortable, the Oyster bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening, and a Rolex Glidelock extension system, allowing fine adjustment of the bracelet length without using any tools.

The Submariner and Submariner Date are equipped with calibre 3230 and calibre 3235 respectively, self-winding mechanical movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Their architecture, manufacturing and innovative features make them singularly precise and reliable. Both movements’ power reserve extends to approximately 70 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex timepieces, watches in the Submariner range are covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation testifies that every watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by a green seal and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

A key to the deep

The Submariner was created specifically for underwater exploration and diving. When it first came out of the Rolex workshops, the watch was an immediate success with many pioneering deep-sea professionals, who were asked to test it. One of those trailblazers was Dimitri Rebikoff, a French engineer and underwater photographer.

In his 1953 report, Rebikoff wrote that it had performed outstandingly well in trials: “We are able to confirm that this watch has not only given entire satisfaction in diving conditions which were extremely tough and particularly murderous for the material used, but that it has proved an indispensable accessory for all diving with independent equipment.”

A Voyage into the World of Rolex

Rolex philosophy

A VOYAGE INTO THE WORLD OF ROLEX

Hans Wilsdorf was firmly convinced of a person’s ability to innovate and strive for excellence. More than 100 years after the creation of the brand, the founder’s philosophy is more present than ever, from the manufacturing of the company’s watches to its commitments worldwide.

Image Component 01

Rolex is host to a variety of professions, brought to life by employees who are experts in their fields.

two column 01

COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

Since the beginning, the story of Rolex has been characterized by the quest for perfection and the ambition to push back the boundaries.

checkerboard component 01

The opposition I encountered seemed insuperable.

At the turn of the 20th century, a visionary entrepreneur based in London was on the verge of success. His aim? To introduce the watchmaking world of the day to an as-yet-unknown dial signature: Rolex. A new name, invented in 1908, it would become one of the world’s most respected brands in the space of a few decades. As Hans Wilsdorf recounted in his memoirs of the early days of his company, the opposition he faced seemed insurmountable at first. The entrepreneur started out with very little, but he did possess invaluable qualities: vision, perseverance and an extraordinary ability to work. An orphan at the age of 12, with nothing other than his determination to help him overcome challenges, Hans Wilsdorf went on to invent the world’s first waterproof self-winding wristwatch with a Perpetual rotor – a watch that has become a benchmark in terms of quality and prestige.

“Too complicated, too fragile, ill-adapted” – the wristwatch was met with scepticism. Yet, relying on his firmly-held beliefs, Hans Wilsdorf managed to achieve his bold objective of establishing the Rolex watch – the Oyster Perpetual – as the archetype of the waterproof timepiece: precise, robust and able to withstand all conditions.

But he was not simply a visionary who endowed Rolex watches with their fundamental technical and aesthetic characteristics. His constant quest for perfection was accompanied by a profound generosity and unshakeable faith in human potential.

UNITING EXPERTISE

An integrated and independent company, Rolex has manufacturing resources that encompass a wide range of skills and knowledge. Watchmakers, engineers, designers and other specialists work closely together from the design to the manufacturing of the watches.

Rolex’s company culture is based above all on human values, which place both expertise and soft skills at the heart of the brand’s different activities.

Rolex is host to a variety of professions, brought to life by employees who are experts in their fields. The company has complete control over its essential components, from the casting of gold alloys to machining, finishing and assembly of the movement, case, dial and bracelet elements, as well as gem-setting. Its know-how is also made available right across the world thanks to an exceptional after-sales service network.

To ensure the brand’s expertise exists into the future, Rolex has its own unique Training Centre. Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and the development of its employees, the centre, located in Geneva, provides training to employees and instructs apprentices. The company aims to pass on to younger generations its pride in its skills and mastery of its knowledge.

two column 03

A WATCH UNLIKE THE REST

The Oyster Perpetual collection was built on the success of the original Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926.

checkerboard component 05

As the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, it played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece.

Over the years, the Oyster became the proud bearer of many other innovations – such as self-winding by means of the Perpetual rotor (1931) – that defined the identity of the models in the collection and forged Rolex’s reputation for excellence, of which chronometric precision and reliability are among the cornerstones.

The Oyster gradually evolved into a collection of watches that integrated new functions and innovative technologies. All the models share fundamental features and a strong visual identity. Today the collection consists of 12 ranges, split into two categories: Classic watches such as the Datejust and the Day Date, and Professional watches, including the Explorer and the GMT-Master II.

As the pioneer of the wristwatch, the company is at the origin of numerous major innovations in the watchmaking industry and has filed over 500 patents in the course of its history.

BORN TO RACE

The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is an icon forever joined in name and function to the world of motor sport. Six decades after its creation it remains in a class of its own among sport chronographs.

02.Image 01 1963 Premier Cosmograph Daytona 6239 002 rajoutJS 1425x985

An iconic model introduced in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona was designed to meet the needs of motor racing professionals. Fitted with a tachymetric bezel and a high-performance mechanical movement, this now legendary chronograph is the instrument of choice for measuring time intervals or determining average speeds.

03.Two Column 01 M116515LN 0041 1911jva 004 1440x900

SYNONYMOUS WITH SPEED

On the Cosmograph Daytona, the elapsed hours and minutes are shown on the counters at 9 and 3 o’clock respectively, and the elapsed seconds are read using the arrow-tipped centre hand and the 60-second scale around the dial.

The Cosmograph Daytona’s bezel, in metal or high-tech ceramic, functions as a tachymeter. Its scale can be used to read an average speed over a given distance, based on elapsed time. This makes it the ideal instrument for measuring speeds up to 400 units per hour, expressed in kilometres, miles, or any other unit of measure.

A chronograph made for the race circuit

The Cosmograph Daytona is equipped with calibre 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, offering a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. This movement incorporates a chronograph function with a reduced number of components, thereby further enhancing its reliability. The chronograph is engaged by a mechanism with a column wheel and vertical clutch. This enables an instantaneous and extremely precise start to the timing.

Superlative chronometer certification

Like all Rolex watches, the Cosmograph Daytona is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories, according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

THE PLACE, THE LEGEND

The Cosmograph Daytona is inextricably linked to the world of motor racing. The watch pays tribute to a place – Daytona Beach, Florida – where passion for speed and racing flourished in the early 20th century. From 1903 to 1935, the hard-packed sand beach in Daytona became famous as the perfect place to beat speed records. No fewer than 80 official records were set there, 14 of which were for the fastest speed in the world.

The Daytona International Speedway® opened in 1959, and Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of the circuit ever since. A few years later, to emphasize the brand’s connection to the American racetrack, Rolex gave its new model the name Cosmograph Daytona.

Over the decades, the brand’s presence in high-octane racing has grown steadily, its support extending to the leading drivers and events worldwide. For much of this historic journey, the Cosmograph Daytona has embodied the privileged bonds between Rolex and motor sport.

Get Your Year Of The Tiger Off To A Great Start With These Rolex Watches

January 29, 2022

New lunar year, new you. But first, a Rolex timepiece to start the Year of the Tiger on the right wrist

Annual resolutions may change due to lifestyle and life stages but one cannot help but agree: It’s important to take stock of the important things in life and be appreciative of the good things that have come your way over the past year. As we welcome the Year of the Tiger, let’s kick off the next lunar year with new objectives and renewed hopes – not forgetting a huge dose of optimism. A Rolex timepiece to mark the new lunar year is always a good idea too. Here are our four recommendations. Happy Chinese New Year!

Oyster Perpetual Air-King
An homage to aviation, the Air-King stands out because of its distinctive black dial. On it are large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking the hours as well as a minute scale, a combination that aids legibility. In addition, the name Air-King is placed above the “Superlative Chronometer” inscription in the same lettering that was designed especially for the model in the 1950s. A handsome yet pared-back watch, the Air-King is for those who want versatility in their horological partner.

The sunray finish on the dial of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 creates beautiful, delicate light reflections that change depending on the position of the wrist.

Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31
For the lady who wants to stand out from the crowd, this white Rolesor version of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 is the perfect choice. Rich with heritage, the Datejust has spanned eras while retaining the enduring aesthetic characteristics that make it so instantly recognisable. It is also not just a pretty face – its Oyster bracelet exudes sporty elegance, making the watch suitable for daily wear. Made of virtually scratchproof sapphire, the crystal, with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock, enhances the legibility of the date window and is also a distinctive and historical feature of the range. The choice of white Rolesor – a combination of Oystersteel and white gold – already lends the timepiece a sophisticated aesthetic, but the diamonds on the bezel and the VI at 6 o’clock on the aubergine dial further amplify the watch’s style.

Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date
Widely known as a reference among divers’ watches, the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date is a timepiece with excellent functionality. It reflects the key features of the original while its unidirectional rotatable bezel stands out for its ease of use. Its 60-minute graduation allows divers to accurately monitor their diving time and decompression stops. Furthermore, the bezel, which features a Cerachrom bezel insert in black ceramic, has a knurled edge that provides excellent grip underwater, even when wearing diving gloves. The iconic Cyclops lens on the sapphire crystal magnifies the watch’s date display for easier reading.

The Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea in Oystersteel comes with a Cerachrom bezel insert in black ceramic, a black dial, large luminescent hour markers and an Oyster bracelet.

Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea
If you are into pushing limits both at work and in life, then you will certainly connect with the philosophy and values of the Rolex Deepsea. After all, this is the timepiece engineered by Rolex for deep-sea exploration, an activity not for the faint-hearted. Like the aforementioned Submariner Date, it features a 60-minute graduated, unidirectional rotatable bezel for divers to precisely monitor their dive and decompression times. But what sets it apart is its Oyster case, which is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet). Not only is its middle case crafted from a solid block of particularly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel, its case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool only accessible by certified Rolex watchmakers. Equipped with calibre 3235, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured in-house, it offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability. In addition, the 44 mm Oyster case is further reinforced with the patented Ringlock system case architecture to ensure an even higher level of resistance and reliability.

Best of wishes from Kee Hing Hung to clients, readers and watch enthusiasts – to lots of prosperity, fortune, health and happiness in the Year of the Tiger.

Rolex Is A Master At Designing And Creating Unique Watch Dials

Rolex Is A Master At Designing And Creating Unique Watch Dials

January 15, 2022

These creations prove that beyond being a watchmaker, Rolex is a dial alchemist too

Every timepiece has a dial, also known as its face. It is more than just a support for all the time-related data. In fact, it represents the identity of the timepiece. One can determine whether a watch is elegant or sporty almost immediately by glancing at its face.

This mastery of dial art is something at which Rolex is particularly adroit. Since Rolex timepieces are widely recognised by the iconic Oyster case, it is even more pertinent for the watchmaker to distinguish every creation by rendering it with an individual character and a unique dial.

Refer to the myriad selection of watch dials and one can’t help but agree on the superlative expertise demonstrated by Rolex. It melds cutting-edge surface physics and chemistry with the mastery of a palette of lacquers to achieve dials that shine with spirit and vitality. To further affirm our point, here are some outstanding creations with dials that arrested our attention.

Let’s face it
The art of dial design is one that is hardly discussed among watch enthusiasts but most will agree that it is a specialised art form as well as a certain means to distinguish a creation from the many others in the market. Rolex is known to have one of the widest libraries of dial designs in terms of patterns, colours and materials. This year, it adds two new motifs to its Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 collection.

The 2021 version of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 features palm and fluted dial motifs. Taking inspiration from mother nature, the palm motif evokes imagery of verdant tropical forests brimming with life and vigour. It can be found in three versions of the Datejust 36. The Oystersteel version has an olive green dial with the palm motif—this combination boasts the strongest association to nature; the yellow Rolesor version (a combination of Oystersteel and yellow gold) features the same pattern on a golden dial; while the Everose Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and Everose gold) sports the palm motif on a silver dial. Both the Oystersteel and yellow Rolesor watches are fitted with an Oyster bracelet, and the Everose Rolesor piece is equipped with a Jubilee bracelet.

m126200 0020 21jva 1500x1500
The Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 features an olive green dial inspired by tropical forests–it evokes a sense of verdant greenery, a balmy oasis in the heat of the tropics. PHOTOS: ROLEX
m126233 0039 21jva 1500x1500
The iconic fluted bezel provided the creative spark for the design of the dial of this Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36, giving the watch a stately presence.

On the other hand, the fluted motif is inspired by the pattern found on a variety of Rolex bezels. It has become synonymous with the watchmaker as well as one of the brand’s signature aesthetic styles. The fluted motif is found on the golden dial of the final watch – another yellow Rolesor version – this time with a Jubilee bracelet.

Both the palm and fluted motifs are created such that when the dials catch light at different angles, they awaken different emotions and bring out the characters of the dials. And for the uninitiated, these dials are crafted out of age-old materials such as copper, zinc, nickel, chromium, titanium and silicon combined with cutting-edge technology, which allows Rolex to create such deep, vibrant metallic colours.

Gem-packed with beauty
Rolex is known for the high quality of its coloured dials, which adorn many of its timepieces. But the brand further demonstrates a wide range of skills and know-how, mastered in-house, to endow the dials of some of its watches with diamonds, sapphires, and other precious stones.

A good example that showcases the gem-setting savoir faire by Rolex is the Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust in 18 ct yellow gold. Paved with 291 diamonds in a perfectly uniform manner, the brilliance and sparkle of the dial captures everyone’s attention. What makes the gem-setting process even tougher for this Lady-Datejust is the relatively small dial diameter of only 28 mm. This means the amount of space the gem-setter has to work with is greatly restricted, as compared to the other watches from other collections. Employing the skill, experience, and patience of the gem-setters, through incredibly precise motions repeated over several hundred times, a glittery stunning dial is created. It is completed by elegant 18 ct yellow gold Roman numerals with a black finish.

m279458rbr 0001 social in store 03 1080x1080
The Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust in 18 ct yellow gold is testament to the superlative skills of Rolex gem-setters. The 28mm timepiece has a dial with one of the smallest surface areas in the watchmaker’s stable.

Gift from earth
Eisenkiesel is a type of quartz coloured red, brown or orange with striped hematite inclusions. Varying from translucent to opaque, the natural material, whose name translates to iron pebbles in German, is not typically used in watchmaking.

But having worked with stone dials in the past, Rolex uses its experience to feature this decorative stone–for the first time–for the dials on two new versions of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 and Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40. In fact, the Swiss watchmaker became the first watch brand to feature the dark quartz.

m128345rbr 0044 21jva 1500x1500
The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 in 18 ct Everose gold with diamond-set bezel sports a dial made of eisenkiesel, a type of dark quartz with unique veining patterns, as well as hour markers and a Roman VI and IX, all in 18 ct gold and set with diamonds.
m228345rbr 0016 social in store 01 1080x1080
Like the Day-Date 36, the Day-Date 40 similarly features a diamond-set bezel but its hour markers are set with 10 baguette-cut diamonds.

Both watches come in 18 ct Everose gold, which immediately presents a different look to the emblematic “presidents’ watch”, making it suitable for both work and play. The dark chocolate hue on the eisenkiesel dial also pairs beautifully with the rich, warm hues of the 18 ct Everose gold. Due to the random nature of the veining pattern found on the quartz mineral, each dial is one of a kind. Rolex is meticulous when selecting the discs of stone, cut by experts from a block of raw material, and only those discs whose colour and structure fully satisfy the brand’s exacting aesthetic requirements are chosen.

Spread Festive Cheer With These Rolex Timepieces In 18 ct Gold

December 1, 2021

’Tis the season to be jolly—celebrate Christmas with your loved ones and mark the holidays with a classy Rolex

With the holiday season coming, it will be no surprise to see everyone’s halls decked in the traditional colours of Christmas—red and green. But gold is yet another well-loved shade during the jolliest time of the year. After all, gold has played a significant role in the history of mankind: it is not only a symbol of nobility but was the gift to baby Jesus from one of the three wise men during biblical times too. Legend also has it that St Nicholas threw three bags of gold coins through an open window with one falling into a stocking, while the popular tune The Twelve Days of Christmas sang: “On the fifth day of Christmas/My true love sent to me/Five golden rings…”.

So, for the most anticipated holiday season of the year, why not mark it, celebrate a milestone or simply spread some cheer to your nearest and dearest with a Rolex timepiece in 18 ct gold? Read on to find out our recommendations.

Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
With travel slowly resuming to normalcy, year-end vacations are likely in the plans for many. That is why the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller will come in handy, especially with its ability to tell time in not one but three time zones, as well as daytime and night-time hours. This Sky-Dweller comes in 18 ct yellow gold with a bright black dial and an Oysterflex bracelet, a combination that makes the watch sophisticated and sporty. We can immediately see it as the perfect horological partner for a high-adrenalin activity such as skiing in Niseko, Japan or for indulging the senses like watching Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.
By operating its own exclusive foundry and always insisting on a high level of excellence, Rolex boasts the ability to create superlative 18 ct gold alloys, including the 18 ct yellow gold for this Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller.

Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date
Since its conception, the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date has been a true symbol of a watch designed to meet the rigours and requirements of diving. But clad in full 18 ct yellow gold, this version of the Submariner Date immediately looks a better match with the immaculately cut business suit than the diving suit. A horological head-turner, it is paired with a unidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert and a royal blue dial with luminescent hour markers. With Rolex committed to top-notch quality, one can be assured that the 18 ct yellow gold for this beauty is made with only the purest metals, meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date sports a unidirectional rotatable bezel that plays an important functional role as its 60-minute graduations allow a diver to accurately and safely monitor diving time and decompression stops.

Oyster Perpetual Explorer
A novelty from 2021, the Oyster Perpetual Explorer is an exciting launch for many fans and watch enthusiasts. Measuring 36 mm, the watch boasts the same measurements as those of the Oyster Perpetual timepieces worn by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on their ascent to the peak of Mount Everest in 1953. While those sported by the legendary explorers were constructed in more functional and pragmatic steel, the watchmaker chose to push the sophistication factor for the new release by crafting it in a yellow Rolesor version— a combination of Oystersteel and yellow gold. The new material combination lends the iconic watch an extra touch of elegance, which makes it suitable for work and play, seven days a week.

Crafted in Oystersteel and yellow gold, the new-generation Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer in 36 mm features a black dial with 3, 6, and 9 numerals and a Chromalight display.

Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II
This Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II comes in 18 ct yellow gold, a gold alloy of the highest quality, which is crafted at the brand’s own exclusive foundry in Switzerland using a proprietary formula. We like how the yellow gold is lustrous and warm at the same time as the watch sits beautifully on any wrist. This model is fitted with a solid-link Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert, as well as a pristine white dial and hands synonymous with Rolex Professional models. On the performance side, the watch is the only chronograph in the world to offer a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory, accessed via its Ring Command bezel countdown, it is the perfect wingman for skippers to chart the next course of direction both at sea or in life.

This Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 comes in a yellow Rolesor version combining Oystersteel and yellow gold which has been featured on Rolex models since the early 1930s and also trademarked for nearly nine decades.

If the aforementioned timepiece is made for urban explorers, then the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 must be created for modern women. This yellow Rolesor version is an expression of elegance through and through. Not only does it retain the enduring aesthetic codes that have spanned eras, it also sports modern elements that appeal to contemporary tastes. Complementing the combination of Oystersteel and yellow gold are a sophisticated white mother-of-pearl, diamond-set dial and an equally refined Jubilee bracelet. Its dial features diamonds in 18 ct yellow gold settings, while its yellow gold bezel is also encrusted with diamonds—glittery touches that further elevate the beauty of the iconic design.

Kee Hing Hung wishes all clients, readers and watch enthusiasts Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Rolex Presents New-generation Oyster Perpetual Explorer and Explorer II Watches

May 7, 2021

The Swiss watchmaker gives both the Explorer and Explorer II a breath of fresh air with continuous evolution

The year 1953 is a significant year for mankind. Not only did explorers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reach the summit of Mount Everest—at 8,848m (29,028 ft) high, no less—that very year, it was also when Rolex introduced the Explorer, which measured 36mm wide, following the first ascent to the summit.

The launch formally cemented the symbiotic relationship between the watchmaker and exploration. As early as the 1930s, Rolex had already been equipping expeditions as a means to test the robustness and reliability of its timepieces under real-life conditions. This benefited the watchmaker as feedback from the members of these different expeditions had a direct influence on the evolution of its watches, making them more precise.

The new Oyster Perpetual Explorer in Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold features a 36mm case, black dial and an Oyster bracelet.

This makes the 2021 launch of the new-generation Explorer particularly noteworthy as Rolex returns to its origins with a 36mm version of the watch, which has the same measurements of the Oyster Perpetual timepieces worn by Sir Edmund and Norgay in 1953. Instead of Oystersteel, the new-generation Explorer is clad in yellow Rolesor, a combination of Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold. (The bezel, winding crown and centre bracelet links are in 18 ct yellow gold, while the case and outer links of the bracelet are in Oystersteel.) This interpretation of the iconic timepiece brings together elegance and performance, which makes for easy wearing on both formal and casual occasions.

Thanks to the optimised Chromalight display, In dark conditions, the intensity of the blue glow emitted by the hour markers and hands now lasts longer. On the other hand, these display elements have a brighter white hue in daylight.

Improvements have also been made to the dial. Now lacquered, the black dial features index hour markers and 3, 6 and 9 numerals that have become the emblematic aesthetic elements of the Explorer over the years. Also, the Chromalight display (left) on the watch dial has been optimised for improved performance. In dark conditions, the blue glow emitted by the hour markers and hands is much more intense and long-lasting due to the innovative and exclusive luminescent material with which they are applied or filled. On the other hand, in daylight, the markers and hands boast a brighter white hue.

Powering the new-generation Explorer is the calibre 3230, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was first released in 2020. Thanks to the employment of various Rolex’s proprietary components, the self-winding movement offers unrivalled performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability.

m226570 0001 21jva 1500x1500

The new-generation Oyster Perpetual Explorer II boasts a redesigned case and bracelet, bringing enhanced visual balance and harmony while remaining true to its aesthetic heritage.

New-generation enhancements, such as a redesigned case and bracelet, have also been introduced to the Explorer II . Measuring 42mm wide, the Oyster case is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100m (330ft) and its middle case is constructed out of a solid block of Oystersteel, which is particularly corrosion resistant. The case back is hermetically screwed down with only Rolex watchmakers being the only ones to access the movement. Fitted with a double waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, the Twinlock winding crown screws down securely against the case.

The new-generation Explorer II is equipped with a three-piece link Oyster bracelet, which features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp that prevents accidental opening. The accompanying Easylink comfort extension link, also developed by the brand, gives the wearer the freedom to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5mm.

Thanks to the evolution, the new-generation Explorer II benefits from enhanced aesthetic balance while staying steadfast to the icon’s aesthetic heritage. Legibility is once again superior with black hour markers and hands standing out on a white lacquer dial. The signature orange 24-hour hand is retained as with the Explorer II inscription, also in orange, on the dial. Like the new-generation Explorer, the Explorer II has also been endowed with an optimised Chromalight display—longer and more intense blue glow emitted by hour markers and hands when it’s dark, and brighter white hue in the day. What drives the Explorer II is the self-winding calibre 3285, which has been designed, developed and produced by the watchmaker.

The new-generation Oyster Perpetual Explorer II also benefits from an optimised Chromalight display.

8 Outstanding Rolex Timepieces That Won't Give You The Blues This Lunar New Year

February 11, 2021

Red and gold are lucky colours to sport during Lunar New Year but how about wearing one of these eight gorgeous Rolex watches with blue dials to make a deep impression?

Oyster Perpetual Milgauss

This Oyster Perpetual Milgauss that comes in Oystersteel boasts one of the rarer shades of blue for its dial. Remaining faithful to its scientific heritage and distinctive aesthetics, the watch is fitted with an orange seconds hand shaped like a lightning bolt as well as a Z-blue dial, an exclusive electric blue that is only available on this Rolex model. Accompanying the dial is a green sapphire crystal developed by Rolex and available exclusively on the Milgauss. Best known for being the first watch of its kind for its resistance to magnetic interference, not only is it scratch- and fade-proof, the sapphire crystal’s light green shade turns nearly luminescent at the bevelled edges.

Oyster Perpetual 41
A new model to the Oyster Perpetual range launched in 2020, the Oyster Perpetual 41 embodies the timeless form and function that is firmly rooted in the pioneering origins of Rolex but puts a dynamic spin on it with a vibrant new look. The turquoise blue dial matched with the timeless elegance of the Oyster Perpetual watch makes it a modern addition to one’s wardrobe. Pushing the technical envelope, Rolex employs the calibre 3230, a movement entirely developed and manufactured in-house, for this watch. The self-winding mechanical movement comes with better precision, longer power reserve and more resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, making the watch even more reliable than ever.

Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41
According to Kee Hing Hung, a bright blue dial is one of the most sought-after among Rolex enthusiasts. Looking at this
Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 in white Rolesor—a combination of Oystersteel and 18 ct white gold—it’s no wonder. With a sunray finish that gives off a subtle glow with each wrist movement, the dial lends the watch an extra dose of sophistication. Complemented by the fluted bezel—an aesthetic element always crafted out of gold—and the supple and comfortable Jubilee five-piece link metal bracelet, the watch is handsome and timeless at once.

Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date
One of the most talked-about models launched in 2020, is the latest generation of the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date that remains faithful to the 1953 original, which set the standard for divers’ watches. And this version in yellow Rolesor—a combination of Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold—with a unidirectional rotatable bezel sporting a blue Cerachrom bezel and a royal blue dial is equal parts sporty and stylish. And it’s not just all about looks: the dial’s luminescent Chromalight display increases legibility in dark environments, giving divers peace of mind. Also, the dial features hour markers in simple geometric shapes such as triangles, circles and rectangles as well as wide hour and minute hands for instant reading even underwater. Of course, reading the date is made easier and more convenient with the iconic Cyclops lens.

Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea
Many would have known that the Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea is a divers’ watch engineered for deep-sea exploration. Waterproof to a depth of 12,800ft (3,900m) with a unidirectional 60-minute rotatable bezel, the watch in Oystersteel with a black ceramic bezel makes for a reliable and functional instrument for a dive trip. But it also commemorates American film-maker, explorer and Rolex Testimonee James Cameron’s historic solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 2012. The two-colour gradient of its D-blue dial goes from brilliant blue to bottomless black—a symbolic design to fete one man’s journey to the deepest place on earth. Besides sporting a special colour treatment, the dial maintains its reliability like those found in other divers’ watches from Rolex, thanks to the highly legible Chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminescence.

Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40
In 1956, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date made history as it was the first watch to indicate the day of the week spelt out in full. Today, it continues being an icon among horophiles but this
Day-Date 40 in platinum that features an ice-blue, diagonal-motif dial is a contemporary rendition of the classic. (For the uninitiated, the ice-blue dial is the discreet and exclusive signature of a Rolex platinum watch.) Matched with a smooth bezel and the beautiful President bracelet, this stately watch is perfect for both work and play, bringing one from the boardroom to the ballroom with effortless ease.

Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust
For those looking for matching timepieces for the significant other, this Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust make for a good option. Being crafted out of platinum, the 28mm-wide timepiece features an ice-blue dial, making it the perfect match for the aforementioned Day-Date 40. Additionally, this Lady-Datejust features diamond-set hour markers on its dial, thus upping its glam factor instantly.

Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
Designed with the frequent flyer in mind, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is characterised by its second time zone display on an off-centred disc on its dial. This handsome variant in white Rolesor—a combination of Oystersteel and 18 ct white gold—sits beautifully on the wrist and is suitable for all occasions. Its dial stands out prominently thanks to the contrast between the silver hue of the metal and the watch dial’s shade of bright blue. The dial also features rectangular index hour markers and longer hands, as well as a Chromalight display with long-lasting luminescence, which enhances legibility. Unique for its innovative system for setting the functions using the rotatable Ring Command bezel and the Saros annual calendar, this is the watch, we dare say, one should own and wear.

Kee Hing Hung wishes all customers and readers a prosperous Year of the Ox blessed with good health and happiness.

8 Brilliant Gifting Ideas For Your Loved Ones This Christmas

December 13, 2020

This holiday season, put a smile on the face of your nearest and dearest by strapping a beautiful and reliable Rolex wristwatch on their wrists

When buying a present for the special people in your life, the main motivation is to express to them that we care about them and that they are important to us. So the thinking process is multi-layered. Will they like this gift? How will this present suit their needs? Do they already have something similar? That is why choosing the perfect present is never easy. But if the choice ticks all the boxes, then the recipient is guaranteed a happy camper this Christmas. Our advice? Take your pick from this curated collection of eight Rolex timepieces that range from sparkling gem-set models to classic tool watches—with and without a twist.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41
A tough year deserves a sweet ending, and there is no better way than gifting yourself a reliable and timeless horological creation like the Oyster Perpetual 41, a new size launched in 2020. A symbol of classic style, the watch is the perfect manifestation of form and function seamlessly blended into a holistic design. Furthermore, the Oyster Perpetual 41 is equipped with calibre 3230, a new, reliable and efficient movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Because of that, the watch boasts a longer power reserve of approximately 70 hours and is more precise, shock- and magnetic-resistant than its predecessors.

For some self-love 101

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust
Slim, lithe and petite, this Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust in 18 ct yellow gold speaks to a classy woman, who covets a watch that tells time accurately and also serves as a stylish accessory. It features an elegant white mother-of-pearl dial with diamond-set hour markers, a sparkling diamond-set bezel and the prestigious President bracelet. With its refined glamour, Rolex’s classic women’s watch, the Lady-Datejust, stands for style and technical performance. Complete with a mother-of-pearl dial, this watch promises you a piece of unique design with no identical dial found on another wrist.

For the low-profile lady who prefers quiet designs over loud, OTT ones

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31
Yet another highlight from 2020’s novelties, this simple but elegant Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 in white Rolesor is a new addition to Rolex’s stable of timepieces for women. First launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial, and consolidated all the major innovations that Rolex had contributed to the modern wristwatch until then. It has since been constantly improved while still retaining the key design codes of the earlier Datejust models. The new Datejust 31 comes into its own with its unique aubergine dial and the diamond-studded “VI” hour marker at 6 o’clock, as well as the diamond-set bezel. The use of white Rolesor—a combination of 18 ct white gold and Oystersteel—gives it timeless appeal, making the watch the perfect choice for daily wear.

For rewarding yourself on closing out the year on a high

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
While leisure travel is not quite possible at the moment, it will return one day in the new year. And when that day comes along, be sure to arm yourself with the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller in 18 ct yellow gold. Made for frequent flyers, the Sky-Dweller is a horological marvel, indicating time (home and away), daytime or night-time, month and date. Of particular interest is the month indication, which is indicated in 12 apertures around the circumference of the dial, with the current month marked in red. This is an outstanding characteristic of the Saros annual calendar system employed in the watch which automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months. The system relieves the wearer the hassle of adjusting the date at the end of a 30-day month as the annual calendar displays the correct date throughout the year. The only adjustment is needed on 1 March.

For the travel-starved individual who is ready to spread his wings the moment restrictions are lifted

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36
Every element of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 in 18 ct yellow gold spells prestige. A Rolex design signature, its fluted bezel is always only crafted out of gold. Matching it in terms of prestige is the President bracelet—with its semi-circular three piece links—which was first created in 1956 for the launch of the Day-Date. The strict standards Rolex adheres to manufacturing its bracelets and clasps represents the brand’s commitment to excellence, making the President bracelet a symbol of refinement. The President bracelet is also only manufactured in previous metals, which adds to its sophistication factor. Of course, the Day-Date is an iconic creation for Rolex because the 1956 original was the first watch in history to offer a modern calendar with an instantaneous day display, spelt out in full in a window on the dial, in addition to the date.

For the power couple—the 36mm Oyster case fits the wrist of both men and women perfectly

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date
The Oyster Perpetual Submariner represents a key moment in the history of watchmaking because its high standards of accuracy, precision and ease of use had set the bar for divers’ watches when it was first launched in 1953. That is why the new generation of the Submariner and Submariner Date launched earlier this year stay faithful to the original design. The Submariner Date in 18 ct white gold comes with a blue Cerachrom bezel and a black dial with large luminescent hour markers. Its rotatable bezel with its 60-minute graduations allows for the accurate and safe monitoring of diving time. Even if you’re not a diver, there is no denying that the Submariner Date is a handsome ticker to sport any time, any day.

For the sporty partner

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 37
To combat the stress at work, take the weekend off, relax with some bubbly and set sail into the sunset—armed with the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 37 in 18 ct Everose gold with an Oysterflex bracelet. The waterproof and robust qualities of the Yacht-Master make it ideal for water sports—sailing, in particular. The Oysterflex bracelet, which sits comfortably on the wrist, is attached to the watch case and Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade, which is over-moulded with high-performance black elastomer—it’s resistant to environmental effects, making it easy and comfortable for the wearer. And what’s a little bling on the dial to up the ante, isn’t it?

For the christening ceremony of your newly-acquired yacht

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona
A meaningful Christmas present is like an astute investment—get it right and the gift can go a long way. A good example is this Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona in 18 ct yellow gold, with an intense black and champagne-colour dial. Boasting more than five decades of heritage, the Cosmograph Daytona is still among the most popular and iconic sports chronographs in the market. Matched with a 18 ct yellow gold Oyster bracelet and bezel with engraved tachymetric scale, this classic take on a horological icon makes for a brilliant gifting option that will stand the test of time.
