Why You Will Be The Envy Of Everyone This Lunar New Year With The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 In 18 ct Everose Gold

FEBRUARY 4, 2020

There is more than one reason why this is known as the “Presidents’ Watch”

It’s a deeply entrenched tradition to sport the colours red and gold—hues considered to be auspicious—during the Chinese New Year festive period. In fact, Chinese families the world over faithfully practise this cultural belief during Lunar New Year so much so that it’s common to see every household decked out in shades of red and gold. To that end, we recommend the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 in 18 ct Everose gold for your wrist as we usher in the Year of the Rat. Cultural traditions aside, the watch alone is impressive enough as an investment, packing enough highlights to excite horophiles.

IN THE PINK
Pink gold is widely used in the watch industry but brands that manufacture their own variants are far and in between. Since Rolex inaugurated its own foundry, it has been producing its own gold variants there. Case in point: 18 ct Everose gold—it is a proprietary, patented pink gold alloy cast in the foundry. Introduced in 2005, 18 ct Everose gold, which boasts a warm, rose-coloured hue, is used on all Rolex models in pink gold. Using 18 ct Everose gold on the Day-Date 40 softens the look of the majestic and stately timepiece, making it a suitable accessory on the wrist for day and night.

A master at mixing-and-matching colours, Rolex endows the Day-Date 40 with a sundust dial that perfectly complements the 18 ct Everose gold case, bezel and bracelet. Besides the elegance exuded by the gilded components, the watchmaker ups the ante by setting 10 baguette-cut diamonds on the dial—they not only add an extra touch of class to the watch but also serves a utilitarian function as hour markers.

FIT FOR THE PRESIDENT
It’s common knowledge that Rolex takes pride in all of its manufacturing processes. The design, development and production of Rolex bracelets and clasps is no exception. Their ergonomics are constantly put under the spotlight to enhance the wearing experience, while their robustness, reliability and aesthetic beauty are of paramount importance to the marque to ensure a high level of quality. For the Day-Date 40, it comes with the iconic President bracelet, which was first created in 1956 for the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. What many Rolex enthusiasts like most about the highly refined metal bracelet, which comes with semi-circular, three-piece links, is how comfortable it sits on the wrist. Today, the President bracelet is still reserved for the Day-Date as well as selected versions of the Datejust for women in precious metals.

ENGINE POWER
Rolex equips the Day-Date 40 with the self-winding mechanical movement, calibre 3255, which is entirely developed and manufactured in-house. Boasting 14 patents, it demonstrates the watchmaker’s constant pursuit for performance excellence. The movement incorporates the Chronergy escapement, which shows efficiency in energy regulation and a high resistance to magnetic interference, as well as the blue Parachrom hairspring—it is 10 times more precise than traditional hairspring in the event of knocks and shocks—in the beating oscillator. Besides these enhancements, calibre 3255 also boasts an improved barrel architecture, all of which contribute to a longer power reserve of three days. Simply put, the watch can run from Friday to Monday without losing accuracy even if not worn or wound.

NOTHING BUT THE BEST
When it was launched in 1956, the Day-Date was a major innovation. It was the first calendar wristwatch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial. Also, it has regularly been sported on the wrists of the powerful and influential over time. That is why it earned the nickname of the “presidents’ watch”, coined by the watch buffs seeing its close relationship with eminent figureheads in society. Interestingly, the day display at 12 o’clock can be customised in a wide array of languages. Also, the Day-Date is only available in 18 ct gold or 950 platinum, underlining its status of the watch par excellence for the distinguished.

4 Things We Like About The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona In Platinum

DECEMBER 21, 2019

Launched in 2013, the platinum version of the sporty chronograph with an ice blue dial was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the icon. Today, it remains a firm favourite

The city of Daytona Beach in Florida, USA is widely known as the world capital of speed with motor races on the sandy strip as early as 1903 and with several world land speed records broken there. The beach’s links with speed and endurance are inextricable—the same way Rolex and automobile racing are. The watchmaker has been partnering the world of motor sports since 1930s and is currently the Global Partner and Official Timepiece of Formula 1. So it’s natural that Rolex has a timepiece inspired by and dedicated to the adrenalin-laced world of speed.

Birth of a Legend

Enter the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. Introduced in 1963, the chronograph, affectionately known simply as “Daytona” among watch enthusiasts, is designed to meet the demands of professional racers. Even till today, the iconic model remains one of the most well-known chronographs in the world.

In 2013, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sporty ticker, Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona Ref 116506, a platinum version of the chronograph that comes with a chestnut brown monobloc Cerachrom bezel in high-tech ceramic and an ice blue dial. While it is not common or conventional for a tool watch to be made of platinum—most are constructed out of stainless steel to withstand daily rigours—the Daytona Ref 116506 received rave reviews from the cognoscenti for its rarity and handsome aesthetics. Six years on, it remains highly sought-after and here, we list four reasons why its popularity among connoisseurs remains sky-high.

GOING PLATINUM

For the 50th anniversary of the Cosmograph Daytona, many had expected Rolex to release an Oystersteel model in reference to the earliest models, which were mostly constructed in the sturdy and versatile metal. Instead, the watchmaker went for luxury and chose 950 platinum, which is one of the world’s rarest and most precious elements—out of 94 natural elements in Earth’s crust, it is the 72nd most common. Because of it being a noble metal, it is unreactive, and hence, not susceptible to rust or tarnish—that explains the material’s high level of corrosion resistance. The case and bracelet is made entirely out of 950 platinum, which is a metallic composition of 950‰ (thousandths) of platinum combined with ruthenium. This way, the alloy is robust enough for case construction, while retaining the metal’s brilliance and shine. On the flipside, platinum, which is soft, elastic and malleable, is not easy to machine and polish. Thanks to the experience of the team of expert craftsmen and metalworkers at Rolex, crafting a case or bracelet is par for the course.

COLOUR THEORY

The platinum case of the Daytona Ref 116506 is matched with a chestnut brown monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in ceramic with engraved numerals and graduations and an ice blue dial. While the ice blue shade is not particularly common among regular Rolex offerings, it is the colour used exclusively on platinum watch models. Also, the combination of chestnut brown and ice blue is not common but one that slowly grows on you. In fact, based on our interaction with horophiles and consumers, many have given the thumbs-up to the colour combination.

WELL-OILED ENGINE

What drives this Daytona Ref 116506 is the calibre 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement developed and manufactured by Rolex. Like all other Rolex Perpetual movements, it is COSC-certified, having passed the stringent accuracy and precision tests at the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) successfully. The movement boasts a precision standard of -2 and +2 sec/day and also some 72 hours of power reserve. Composed of only 290 components—far fewer than that in a regular chronograph movement—the calibre 4130 features a simpler yet more effective and efficient movement architecture. Of particular note is the employment of the blue Parachrom hairspring in the movement. Crafted from a paramagnetic alloy, the Parachrom hairspring is unaffected by magnetic fields and up to 10 times more shock-resistant than regular ones. All these factors make the calibre 4130 much more reliable than most of the chronograph movements in the market.

CIRCLE OF LIGHT

Like some of its other Professional siblings in the family, the Daytona Ref 116506 features a Cerachrom bezel, which is developed and patented by Rolex. It is not just a bezel constructed out of high-tech ceramic but it boasts a number of advantages. It is not only corrosion-resistant but its hardness makes it scratch-proof too. The Cerachrom bezel also keeps its colour despite the effects of ultra-violet rays. Legibility of the numerals on the tachymetric scale is extremely legible too. Being manufactured in a single piece, the Cerachrom bezel holds the sapphire crystal firmly in place on the middle case, ensuring the waterproofness of the case.

Key Figures You Need to Know About The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust 28 In Oystersteel And Yellow Gold

JANUARY 20, 2020

What makes the highly popular Lady-Datejust 28 watch such a hot favourite among women?

Lady Datejust m279383rbr 0015

In 1945, Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Datejust to commemorate its 40th anniversary. It was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial. The first women’s version of the date chronometer known as the Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust was launched in the late 1950s. It fused classic sophistication with functionality into a smaller, daintier timepiece for a woman’s wrist. Over the decades, Rolex produced Lady-Datejust watches in various sizes until when it launched the Lady-Datejust 28 in 2015. Available in a 28mm Oyster case, the Lady-Datejust 28 is a firm favourite among modern women for its ability to bring them effortlessly from boardroom to the ballroom. Using the Lady-Datejust 28 in yellow Rolesor (a combination of Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold) as an example, we list the important figures of the watch that one should know by heart.

2 — NUMBER OF METALS USED TO CRAFT THE EXTERIOR OF THE LADY-DATEJUST 28
Oystersteel is reliable and robust, while gold is shiny and precious. That is why Rolex has been combining the use of these two metals in its watches since the early 1930s. Known as Rolesor—the use of gold and steel, with their contrasting colours and radiance, on a single Rolex watch—this metallic combination is well-loved by consumers, a prominent pillar of the Oyster collection, and employed in the Lady-Datejust 28.

3 — WHERE THE ICONIC CYCLOPS LENS IS LOCATED AT
For its earlier watch releases, Rolex introduced a date indicator via a disc in a window located at 3 o’clock on the dial. In 1953, the Cyclops lens, a domed shape that magnifies the date for better legibility, was added to the sapphire crystal. It has since become one of the iconic and instantly recognizable characteristics of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust collection, of which the Lady-Datejust 28 is a part of.

5 — NUMBER OF PIECES IN EACH LINK OF THE ACCOMPANYING JUBILEE BRACELET
Equipped with the Jubilee bracelet, the Lady-Datejust 28 always sits beautifully and comfortably on the wrist of the wearer. First designed in 1945, the five-piece link metal bracelet was made especially for the launch of the original Oyster Perpetual Datejust. Ergonomics have taken into consideration for its creation with extra attention paid to the design, development and production of the bracelet and its clasp as well as the quality control tests they go through.

18 – THE CARATAGE OF THE GOLD USED TO MANUFACTURE THE HOUR MARKERS
The hour markers on the unique lavender dial of the Lady-Datejust 28 are fashioned from 18 ct gold to prevent tarnishing. On each hour marker is a diamond that is set by hand except that of 12 o’clock, which features the Rolex crown logo. Handiwork features prominently in a Rolex dial as many components are designed and manufactured in-house by hand to ensure a high level of perfection.

2236 — THE REFERENCE NUMBER OF THE CALIBRE FITTED IN THE LADY-DATEJUST 28
As with all Rolex watches, the timepiece is not just a pretty face. The Lady-Datejust 28 is equipped with the self-winding calibre 2236, a new-generation mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured in-house. What is special about this movement is the use of the Syloxi hairspring in silicon, which is insensitive to surrounding magnetic forces—many electronic products we use daily such as smartphones and laptops give strong magnetic fields that can affect the accuracy and precision of the watches. The Syloxi hairspring remains unaffected by temperature variations, and knocks and shocks—subjected to shocks, it is up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring. All these contributes to calibre 2236 boasting a superlative level of chronometric performance—something that consumers greatly appreciate.
