Why The TUDOR Pelagos 39 Makes The Ideal Timepiece In And Out Of Water
3 Min read
Striking and versatile, the watch is perfect for daily wear and all occasions

The Pelagos collection is TUDOR’s family of technical divers’ timepieces loved for its clean, utilitarian look and versatile functionality. The Swiss watchmaker, famed for its robust and professional diving watches, adds a new dimension to the collection, with the recent launch of the Pelagos 39. The latest addition is a compact timepiece that can be worn both in and out of water. TUDOR best sums it up: the watch is “at the crossroads between the world of technical diving and urban sophistication”.

All in the family

The Pelagos 39 is strikingly similar to its brethren, with TUDOR following the aesthetics of the Pelagos collection to a T.

Featuring a unidirectional rotating bezel, the newly-launched watch stands out with a sunray satin-finished ceramic insert with Swiss Super-LumiNova luminous material. Complementing the bezel insert is the sunray satin-finished black dial that comes with luminescent ceramic composite monobloc applied hour markers – the choice of this material not only enhances the technical aesthetics, but it also increases the luminous surface of the markers, thus improving legibility at night and under water.

And what’s a TUDOR watch without the iconic “Snowflake” hands, first introduced in its divers’ watches in 1969? The hands, as well as the hour markers and bezel, are coated with Swiss Super-LumiNova luminescent material in the iconic Pelagos blue.

Differentiating factors

What makes the Pelagos 39 stand out is the way it sits on the wrist – at 39mm and 11.8mm thick, it is both lithe and compact.

Another key difference is its use of grade 2 titanium: fully crafted out of the surprisingly lightweight material, it ensures optimal comfort for the wearer.

A closer look at the Pelagos 39 also reveals three aesthetic differences from its predecessors. First, the model’s name sits at 6 o’clock in glossy cheery red instead of white letters of the original. Next, “200m – 660 ft” is inscribed on the line below, indicating that the Pelagos 39 is waterproof to 200m instead of the usual 500m the classic Pelagos is known for.

The Pelagos 39 is versatility personified, making it the ideal timepiece for workdays and weekends alike.
Lastly, the Pelagos 39 is a simple time-only model. That is also why it’s powered by the Manufacture Calibre MT5400, which is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

The movement is also “weekend-proof” thanks to its 70-hour power reserve – the wearer can take the watch off on a Friday evening and put it back on again on Monday morning, without having to wind it.

Extra touch of versatility

Thanks to its size, the Pelagos 39 is suitable for work and play but to further up the ante, TUDOR offers it with two strap variations. It is supplied with an entirely satin-brushed titanium bracelet equipped with the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp, as well as a complimentary black rubber strap.

Both strap variants offer an extension option for ease of use over a dry-suit: The “T-fit” clasp gives an instant adjustment of the total length of the bracelet along an adjustment window of 8 millimetres, while the strap comes with a rubber extension piece. With it, the rubber strap can be further lengthened by another 110mm.

As proof of the confidence TUDOR has in its watches, the Pelagos 39 comes with a five-year international guarantee that is linked to the watch, essentially making it transferable with no intermediate checks required.

While essentially a sports watch, its classic, evergreen looks make the Pelagos 39mm a great option for women too.
